13th of December 2018 – Acumen Data Science Team participates in Kaggle Competition.
For those who do not know Kaggle, according to Wikipedia, Kaggle is an online community of data scientists and machine learners, owned by Google. Kaggle allows users to find and publish data sets, explore and build models in a web-based data-science environment, work with other data scientists and machine learning engineers, and enter competitions to solve data science challenges. The community recently set up a tech-competition on deep machine learning, and Acumen was eager to join. The assignment sounded very simple: ‘Determine the type of whale, based on a picture of its tail’. All easier said than done of course, especially when you know that more than 5000 different species of whales are defined in the data-set. Fortunately, we have about 25,000 photos available to train our models. The team will try to complete this assignment by using deep learning, more specifically by building a “convolutional neural network” (wikipedia is your friend). Let the learning begin!
